Hemoglobin is a crucial protein found in red blood cells that carries oxygen from the lungs to all parts of the body and returns carbon dioxide back to the lungs for exhalation. Testing hemoglobin levels is one of the most common laboratory tests performed as part of a complete blood count. This test helps healthcare providers evaluate overall health and diagnose various conditions including anemia, polycythemia, and other blood disorders.

Normal hemoglobin levels vary based on age and sex. For adult men, the typical range is approximately 13.5 to 17.5 grams per deciliter of blood, while for adult women it is generally 12.0 to 15.5 grams per deciliter. Children have different reference ranges depending on their age. Pregnant women often have slightly lower hemoglobin levels due to increased blood volume. Values outside these ranges may indicate underlying health issues that require further investigation.

Low hemoglobin levels, known as anemia, can result from various causes including iron deficiency, vitamin B12 or folate deficiency, chronic diseases, blood loss, or bone marrow problems. Symptoms of low hemoglobin may include fatigue, weakness, pale skin, shortness of breath, dizziness, and rapid heartbeat. High hemoglobin levels can occur due to dehydration, living at high altitudes, smoking, lung disease, heart disease, or certain bone marrow disorders. Elevated levels may cause headaches, dizziness, and increased blood clotting risk.

The hemoglobin test is typically performed using a blood sample drawn from a vein in the arm. No special preparation is usually required, though your healthcare provider may give specific instructions if hemoglobin testing is part of a larger panel of tests. Results are usually available within hours to a day. If your hemoglobin levels are abnormal, your healthcare provider may order additional tests to determine the underlying cause and recommend appropriate treatment, which could include dietary changes, supplements, medications, or other interventions depending on the specific condition identified.
