Thyroid function tests are laboratory examinations that measure how well your thyroid gland is working. The thyroid is a small butterfly-shaped gland located in the front of your neck that produces hormones essential for regulating your metabolism, energy levels, body temperature, and many other vital functions. When the thyroid produces too much or too little hormone, it can cause a wide range of symptoms affecting your overall health and wellbeing.

The most common thyroid function tests include TSH (thyroid-stimulating hormone), free T4 (thyroxine), and free T3 (triiodothyronine). TSH is produced by the pituitary gland in your brain and signals the thyroid to produce hormones. When thyroid hormone levels are low, TSH levels rise to stimulate more production. Conversely, when thyroid hormone levels are high, TSH levels drop. Free T4 and free T3 are the active thyroid hormones circulating in your bloodstream. T4 is the main hormone produced by the thyroid, while T3 is the more active form that affects your cells directly. Testing these levels together helps doctors understand whether your thyroid is overactive (hyperthyroidism), underactive (hypothyroidism), or functioning normally.

Your doctor may order thyroid function tests if you have symptoms suggesting thyroid problems, such as unexplained weight changes, fatigue, anxiety, tremors, rapid or slow heartbeat, sensitivity to heat or cold, changes in bowel habits, hair loss, or menstrual irregularities. These tests are also used to monitor people already diagnosed with thyroid conditions and those taking thyroid medication. Pregnant women, individuals with a family history of thyroid disease, and people with autoimmune conditions may need regular thyroid screening.

The thyroid function test is performed using a simple blood sample, usually drawn from a vein in your arm. No special preparation is typically required, though you should inform your doctor about any medications or supplements you are taking, as some can affect test results. Your doctor will interpret the results in the context of your symptoms, medical history, and other test findings to determine if treatment or further evaluation is needed.
